Cup of tea at the well at the world’s end. Not really, just the southern tip of Finland but it feels like a fairy story. Comfortable on an alpaca farm 90 minutes from Helsinki Four grain porridge in the market on a rainy Helsinki morning It’s a bit nippy up on deck but I’ve found a good position ...warm air blowing from the ventilation system Arriving in Finland Well, the crowd went wild and rightly so. I expected tutus, of which i am not fond, in this production of peer gynt at The Riga opera house. Instead I was treated a warm, passionate, witty hour and a half choreographed by much- feted young Romanian/Slovenian Edward Clug. Set and costume design fabulous. One quirky detail: as the anti-hero is about to part with his forlorn love, she gives him a coin as a parting gift. He wanders over to a toy plane, drops the coin in the slot and gently rocks his way to faraway lands. So bold playing with humour at this stage of the story! At the ballet in Riga! Just when you thought your run of good luck must have peaked, you arrive in Riga to find your accommodation bang smack in the heart of the old town in a beautiful 18th century building with a charming young hostess. Then you go for walk in the park find a strange installation and realise that the Riga art biennale is currently on. That’s got tomorrow sorted! Kaunas. Gems among the gems
