Arriving in Finland

Well, the crowd went wild and rightly so. I expected tutus, of which i am not fond, in this production of peer gynt at The Riga opera house. Instead I was treated a warm, passionate, witty hour and a half choreographed by much- feted young Romanian/Slovenian Edward Clug. Set and costume design fabulous. One quirky detail: as the anti-hero is about to part with his forlorn love, she gives him a coin as a parting gift. He wanders over to a toy plane, drops the coin in the slot and gently rocks his way to faraway lands. So bold playing with humour at this stage of the story!

At the ballet in Riga!

Just when you thought your run of good luck must have peaked, you arrive in Riga to find your accommodation bang smack in the heart of the old town in a beautiful 18th century building with a charming young hostess. Then you go for walk in the park find a strange installation and realise that the Riga art biennale is currently on. That’s got tomorrow sorted!

Kaunas. Gems among the gems

Bloody hell. Nearly missed the train again. Phew! Trying to decipher the mystery of Polish trains since I took the train this morning to the airport instead of Bialystok. Which meant a 4 hour wait for the next train. Which meant a really bad mushroom pizza in some unidentifiable western suburb. Which meant I missed my connection to Kaunas. Which means I’m staying overnight in Bialystok and taking bus to Kaunas tomorrow (no trains on Monday). Back to deciphering. So in Poland there is one platform but tracks on either side. You can be on platform 5 and the track on either side is say 22 and 6. So you are on platform 5 but see track 22 and panic. Then the directional sign says next train at 15.09 to some unknown place. Can’t find your train which is supposed to leave at 14;53. Ask a few people ...impossible with limited English. Turn around and the sign has changed. Next train is yours at 14:53 running 5 minutes late. It’s 14:42. You stop to take a picture. Turn around and the silent train has come and is about to go. You scramble in just before it pulls away. Lug your bag through the carriages and sit on 3 different seats marked 76 til you get the right one. The next three trips are by bus. Probably a good thing.
